Research Summary
Dr. Giardina is trained as a cardiologist, clinical pharmacologist and electro-pharmacologist whose current areas of interest focus on prevention and cardiovascular health. Dr. Giardina is interested in vascular risk for heart disease and stroke in women and the role of physical activity, diet, and behavior as they impact on risk.
Research Activities
Current research activities in post-menopausal women relate to the following: 1)The metabolic syndrome and its vascular risk in minority women in Northern Manhattan. This study combines community outreach programs for behavior modification to alter traditional cardiovascular risk (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, obesity) and novel markers assessed by carotid intimal media thickness as well as hemostatic and fibrinolytic markers. 2) Health disparities on breast cancer risk and outcome in minority women in Northern Manhattan 3) Attitudes about knowledge, risk and perception of body size among women and their families.
