Novel risk factors for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Dr. Barr’s research is primarily in respiratory epidemiology. He has evaluated hormonal and analgesic risk factors for asthma and COPD in the Nurses’ Health Study. He is currently funded to extend the investigations of hormones and asthma and usage of over-the-counter analgesic drugs during asthma exacerbations and their effects on the inflammatory process. He is also co-PI of the Columbia Field Center of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a large NHLBI-funded cohort study, and a co-investigator of a study of long-term exposure to air pollution in MESA. Dr. Barr is also interested in clinical epidemiology and the use of novel epidemiologic methods, particularly with respect to direct/indirect effects and time series analysis.
